Woof, woof! Many guardians wonder how to best support their youth during the start of a new school year. Whether a child is stepping into school for the very first time or simply starting a new grade, transitions can stir up big feelings. Moving from homeschool to a traditional classroom can be a big adjustment.
One of the most helpful things you can do is talk with your niece about what to expect in her new environment, such as sitting with other students, following a schedule, or raising her hand to speak. These conversations can help take away some of the unknowns that can make her anxious. It’s also important to normalize her feelings and let her know it’s perfectly okay to feel shy, nervous, or even overwhelmed at first. Reminding her that many kids feel the same way can ease her worries.
Since she may not have had as much peer interaction during homeschool, giving her opportunities to practice social skills through playdates or family gatherings can help her feel more comfortable making friends. Another great way to build confidence is by encouraging her to engage in activities she enjoys, such as joining a school club or playing a sport. Extracurricular activities can help to connect her with peers who share similar interests, which can foster a sense of belonging and achievement.
Additionally, staying connected throughout the school week and/or on the weekends by asking about her favorite part of the school day or offering to help with projects can remind her that you are a strong support system. Knowing that you are interested and willing to assist can make her feel seen, and less alone in navigating new challenges. A consistent presence as a trusted adult can significantly reduce anxiety and empower her to tackle these new experiences. Celebrating her small victories, whether it’s making a new friend or understanding a new concept, will also reinforce her belief in her own capabilities.
Finally, keep communication open with her teacher and share what you know about her learning style, interests, or any concerns. Teachers are valuable allies, and together you can create a smoother transition for your niece. It’s normal for kids to need time to adjust. If your niece’s worries seem overwhelming or persist, consider reaching out to her school counselor for extra support.
The transition may take a little time, but she will likely find her footing more quickly than you expect. With your encouragement, she will discover that the traditional classroom is not only a place to learn but also to build friendships and discover new strengths.
Many tail-wags to you!
